Organization Bio

CWA 2001 is the Charleston-area local of Communications Workers of America. With nearly 1000 members, it represents individuals from Frontier Communications, AT&T Wireless, Avaya, AFT staff, and WV ABCA.

Company Story

The CWA 2001 reached out to Jamie Summers-Brown for help with its defunct website. President Ken Williams explains, “We had two different individuals we had to go through for our service. . .one person modernized his equipment, and (one) didn’t. . .so they weren’t compatible anymore. It just came to a complete halt.”

Jamie quickly met with Williams and Secretary-treasurer Robin Young. They told Jamie what they wanted on and from the site, with Jamie offering recommendations. Young was impressed with Jamie’s input. “Give him an idea and just say something, (and) he worked magic with it.”

Working out the domain transfer with the former provider, Jamie soon had a new website up on a dependable hosting service, and transferred the local’s email system to the much more reliable Google. He also set up Williams’ and Young’s individual devices to work with the new changes. Williams was grateful. “We have to be able to have that because we process a lot of grievances. Everything we do impacts somebody’s livelihood so we have to have that working, and he got that all straightened out.”

On Time and Reliable

Both have been amazed by Jamie’s quick response time. Communicating with previous, out-of-state providers had often been frustrating. But with Jamie, when the CWA 2001 needs an answer, a reply is almost immediate. Young observed, “Wherever he is, it seems like he takes the time. He (told us), ‘I will always get back to you.’ If it’s not right then, it’s not long before you hear from him.”

Williams respects that work ethic. “(That) he reacts right now is a big deal to me, because our members don’t want to wait. If you’re not first with the information, you hear about it.” Citing an example, Williams shared that during recent contract negotiations, he called Jamie late in the evening when a tentative agreement had been reached. Jamie immediately posted the information to the CWA 2001’s website. “That’s as quick as you can get,” Williams stated.

“(It’s) what I liked about him from the beginning. When we called him, he called right back and he showed up immediately. And he said then if we need something to call him or email him or whatever, and he would get right on it. He’s always kept his word on that.”

“I just appreciate service like that,” Williams stressed. “You can’t take that lightly nowadays. That can’t be taken for granted.”

He concluded, “When you meet him, he’s all business, but at the same time he’s got an easy personality where you don’t mind dealing with him. That’s what I get from him.”

“And I like that.  Because he handles his business. He keeps his word. He is on time. I’m all about that.”
